Greenville Housing Commission is a public housing agency that helps provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The Greenville Housing Commission was established by the City of Greenville in 1969.
The Public Housing Program was built and first occupied in 1972. The Public Housing Program has 54 units for elderly and disabled individuals (Friendship House West) and 35 single-family units.
In 1979, the Greenville Housing Commission established the Greenville Housing Development Corporation, and obtained funding under the Section 8 New Construction Program to build another 41 units of elderly and disabled units (Friendship House East) along with 20 townhouses (Chase Ridge Townhomes).
The Section 8 Housing Voucher Program funding was obtained in 1989 and initially provided funding for 25 vouchers. The program has grown to provide funding for 107 vouchers. Our current service area encompasses a 20 mile radius of Greenville.
Under all three programs the Greenville Housing Commission manages, 257 units of housing under 3 separate programs.
